Throat discomfort and swallowing problems

image1

Many individuals may become aware of a feeling of a lump or discomfort in the throat area or experience difficulty swallowing. This can be due to a variety of reasons including reflux, infection, allergy, anatomical issues and occasionally underlying malignancy. Stress and anxiety can also be implicated. History, examination and selected investigations can usually determine the underlying cause and exclude sinister pathology in a timely fashion.

Voice Problems

Many indivuals require to speak or sing for prolonged periods of time and their livelihood can depend on this. These individuals include singers, actors, teachers, call centre workers, personal trainers, and many more. Prevention is very important and Miss MacGregor and her speech and language therapy colleagues can provide advice in this regard. Early intervention is also important to avoid any lasting damage to the vocal cords. Treatment for many disorders may require a course of speech and language therapy and occasionally surgery is indicated.

Specialist Areas & Operations Performed

Neck Lump Assessment

image3

Most neck lumps are benign and are due to reactive lymph nodes or thyroid and salivary gland swellings. Examination and imaging such as ultrasound and/or CT/MRI scanning can usually confirm the diagnosis.

Laryngoscopy and Pharyngoscopy

image4

Examination of the throat and voice box area under a general anaesthetic with or without biopsy and also excision of polyps or nodules and other abnormalities of the vocal cords.

Tonsillectomy

image5

Tonsils may be required to be removed as a result of recurrent acute tonsillitis, quinsy (abscess formation), upper airway obstruction because of enlarged tonsils and occasionally because of significant tonsil stone formation.

Neck Lump Excision

Neck lump excision including lymph nodes, salivary and thyroid glands.

Your Consultation

Consultation

At your initial consultation Miss MacGregor will take a history from you and then carry out a careful examination. This will include inspection of the nose and mouth and palpation of the neck if appropriate. A flexible nasendoscopy may then be carried out to examine the throat and voice box area in more detail if indicated. This involves passing a small flexible tube gently through your nose. This is a straightforward procedure which does not require any prior preparation. You will be able to drive, return home or to work immediately afterwards. Following assessment a diagnosis will be made and a plan of investigations and treatment will be discussed.
